Inpatient Behavioral Health Services
Berkshire Medical Center provides inpatient behavioral health services with intensive, round-the-clock care for individuals experiencing acute mental health conditions and substance use disorders. Our care team aids in stabilizing symptoms, offers therapeutic interventions, and helps patients develop coping strategies to transition to the next level of care.
Berkshire Health Systems has recovery and stabilization programs for men and women confronting addiction to drugs and alcohol. Addiction to alcohol and other drugs is a chronic disease requiring professional intervention and a life-long determination to resist and rise above its destructive impulses. Our highly skilled team of substance use professionals work with each patient to address the many physical and emotional effects of addiction.
Detoxification Program at the McGee Recovery Center
Our recovery center is a 21-bed acute treatment center providing expert medical care for safe withdrawal, the unit provides group treatment anchored by the principles of safety, early recovery, and relapse prevention.

Long-Term Stabilization Program

Stay time average around 14 days, depending on individual circumstances. Housed on Kent Avenue, the home is staffed by substance use clinicians who help clients stabilize against their addictive impulses and build on their sobriety recovery skills.

Our 30-bed stabilization program was created to improve long-term recovery for people recuperating from opioid, alcohol and other substance addictions. It’s a vital bridge between initial detoxification at the McGee unit and community-based residential programs.

Our adult acute behavioral health program is a 20-bed, Massachusetts Department of Mental Health-licensed inpatient psychiatric care for individuals 18-year-olds and older. The unit provides a thorough medical, psychiatric and psychosocial assessment, as well as risk assessment for suicide or other violence. Our patient population is diverse, and individual treatment is tailored to meet the specific needs of the patient. Patients with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders are provided additional treatment and education for the impact of alcohol and/or other substances in their lives. Intensive psychiatric care is provided in the form of group, individual, family and psychopharmacological treatment.

Outpatient Behavioral Health Services

Our licensed treatment programs, overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, provide comprehensive care and support. With crisis-trained clinicians in North Adams, Pittsfield, and Great Barrington Emergency facilities, we ensure 24/7 screening and stabilization for individuals facing behavioral health challenges. Following hospital-based programs, we work closely with the Brien Center to facilitate ongoing outpatient therapy and support, ensuring a smooth transition towards recovery.

Adult Partial Hospitalization Program
The Partial Hospital Program at Berkshire Medical Center is an intensive, structured outpatient group therapy program for individuals 18-year-old and older who are challenged with depression and/or anxiety disorders, with or without co-occurring mental health conditions such as PTSD and personality disorders. The program provides diagnostic and clinical services for individuals in need of more intensive care than is offered through outpatient services. With an emphasis on skill-building and ongoing recovery, milieu-based treatment is provided by a multidisciplinary behavioral health team, 5 days/week, 5 hours day, for a total of 25 hours each week. Along with group therapy, treatment includes psychiatric evaluation and ongoing monitoring throughout an episode of care, which typically lasts for 10 days. Patients are expected to attend daily.
Patients who might benefit from Partial Hospital Program care include patients with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and personality disorders who require intensive treatment but are stable enough for partial hospitalization levels of care.
Adult Partial Hospitalization Program
Please be advised that this program does not treat active symptoms of psychosis or substance use. The program is voluntary, and patients must agree to abstain from using substances during their enrollment. Referrals are accepted from primary care physicians or outpatient BH therapists.

Berkshire Medical Centers Youth Intensive Outpatient Program offers structured, short-term ambulatory behavioral health treatment for individuals 12-17-year-olds. With clinical oversight and consultation from child psychiatrists, this program provides strength-based and trauma-informed care that emphasizes skill-building, interpersonal connection, psychological safety, and growth. With an emphasis on a stable therapeutic milieu and staffed by licensed Behavioral Health clinicians, this youth program leverages group treatment to facilitate these goals.
Programming occurs Monday-Friday, 3:00PM – 6:00pm.
Referrals are accepted from pediatricians or outpatient Behavioral Health providers.

Electroconvulsive Therapy is a medical procedure that uses electricity to treat severe depression, mania, catatonia, schizophrenia, and other mental health conditions that have not responded to other forms of treatment. Most patients benefit from a series of treatments, usually 6-12, spaced out over several weeks/ months. Some patients might require maintenance treatments. Electroconvulsive Therapy is available on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Using a collaborative team approach our goal is to maximize the effectiveness of Electroconvulsive Therapy combined with other treatment options offered at Berkshire Medical Center. Our compassionate team of Psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses are dedicated to helping patients get the care they need in our own community.

Behavioral Health Integration is a clinically focused, time-limited consultation service intended to increase access to Behavioral Health care for primary care patients who may be suffering from common mental health issues.
The integration team is staffed by independently licensed Behavioral Health clinicians who are embedded in Berkshire Health Systems primary care practices where they provide brief, evidence-based Behavioral Health assessment, consultation, and brief treatment to primary care patients. Psychiatry residents, advanced practice psychiatric nurses and psychiatrists may also be involved with selected cases. Referrals are accepted from primary care providers.
