Williamstown Apothecary–Frequently Asked Questions: October 15, 2024

 

Q: Why is Williamstown Apothecary closing?  

A: Williamstown Apothecary will be closing on Thursday, November 14, 2024 due to low utilization and pharmaceutical reimbursement rates. 

 

Q: How can you say that there is low utilization? The Apothecary is always busy! 

A: Pharmacies are dependent on a complicated system of payment reimbursements from insurance companies and other programs. In the case of the Williamstown Apothecary, the prescriptions being processed did not reach a rate of reimbursement that was financially sustainable to continue operating the pharmacy. 

 

Q: What will happen to my prescriptions at Williamstown Apothecary?  

A: In terms of next steps, prescriptions at the Williamstown Apothecary will be transferred to the Berkshire Community Pharmacy located in the main lobby of the North Adams Regional Hospital, unless individual patients request transfer to another pharmacy of their choice.  

The Berkshire Community Pharmacy at North Adams serves all of Northern Berkshire with prescription and over-the-counter medications and is conveniently located at NARH, close to various primary care and specialty provider practices, laboratory and imaging services, as well as emergency and inpatient care.  

 

Q: When is the last day for filling a prescription at the Williamstown Apothecary?  

A: The final day for filling new prescriptions at Williamstown Apothecary will be Monday, November 11, and the last day to pick up prescriptions at the Apothecary will be Wednesday, November 13. 

 

Q: What if I can’t get to the North Adams location?  

A: Berkshire Community Pharmacy at North Adams also offers free delivery and mail-order services. Call 413-664-5333 to speak with a pharmacy team member and learn more. 

 

Q: Are there new services available at the North Adams location? 

A: Yes, the Berkshire Community Pharmacy at North Adams also offers: 

  • Free home delivery or mailing of prescriptions within Berkshire County 
  • On-site consultation with a registered pharmacist 
  • Free medication packaging for managing multiple prescriptions 
  • Medication refill sync program 
  • Pet medications, over-the-counter medications, and personal care items 

 

Q: What if I don’t want my prescription to go to North Adams?  

A: If you would like your prescription to be transferred to an alternate pharmacy, please call the Williamstown Apothecary at 413-458-7373 and ask to speak to a pharmacy team member. On or after Thursday, November 14, please call the Berkshire Community Pharmacy at North Adams to request a prescription transfer at 413-664-5333. 

 

Q: Where will prescriptions go and how far away will it be from the Apothecary location?  

A: In terms of next steps, prescriptions at the Williamstown Apothecary will be transferred to the Berkshire Community Pharmacy located in the main lobby of the North Adams Regional Hospital, unless individual patients request transfer to another pharmacy of their choice.  

The Berkshire Community Pharmacy at North Adams, about 6 miles away from the Williamstown location, serves all of Northern Berkshire with prescription and over-the-counter medications and is conveniently located at NARH, close to other healthcare services. 

 

Q: Does Williams College plan to provide any services for students that do not have a car to get to North Adams?  

A: BHS is working closely with the College to communicate this information to the Williams community and is in the process of planning new ways to support students who may have transportation challenges, including through on-campus delivery.  

 

Q: What about the Script Center/Prescription Vending Machine? 

A: Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy Regulations require a prescription kiosk to be located on the premises of a pharmacy or on the campus of a hospital-based pharmacy and will not permit the operation of the Script Center in Williamstown after the Apothecary’s closure.  

We are planning to seek approval to transition the Script Center from Williamstown to our North Adams location and will keep the community apprised of this move.  

 

Q: What are the hours of the North Adams pharmacy? Are you open on evenings and  weekends? 

A: The current hours for the North Adams pharmacy are Monday to Friday 8:00am-6:00pm, and Saturday 8:00am – 1:00pm. We are planning to offer additional weekend hours later in the fall and will update the community when a new schedule is available. 

 

Q: What is the parking like at the North Adams location? 

A: The North Adams Regional Hospital Campus at 71 Hospital Ave. in North Adams, has a large number of free and convenient on-site parking spaces.  Free valet parking is also available Monday-Friday 6:30am-2:30pm.
